All the hair in one bundle came from one person. This is why texture, thickness and colour stay the same from root to tip. Mixed donor hair is cheaper to put together and is the most common swap behind a raw label.

Every strand faces the same way, root to tip. When strands face opposite directions they catch on each other, and that is what causes matting near the weft.

The Hindu ritual where someone offers their hair at a temple as an act of faith. This donation, not commercial collection, is where real Indian temple hair comes from. The donor is never paid.

Pulling the hair through fine metal teeth to take out short and broken strands. It is why a good bundle stays full at the ends instead of thinning out.

The stitched seam holding the hair together at the top of a bundle. Machine wefts are stronger and shed less. Hand tied wefts lie flatter but are more delicate.

Heat and steam used to force a curl into hair that did not grow that way. It is why some bundles have identical curls, and why that curl drops out permanently after a few washes.

A coating that makes processed hair feel smooth in the packet. It washes off within a few weeks, and the hair underneath is usually dry and rough.

Double drawn means most strands are close to the same length, giving a thick end. Single drawn keeps natural length variation and tapers slightly, which looks more like real growth.

Marketing terms. There is no governing body and no standard behind them, so any seller can print any grade on any packet. Ignore the letter. Check where the hair came from and what was done to it.

Five things move the price, and only one of them is the hair itself:

• Length. Price climbs sharply after 24 inches, because uncut hair that long is rare.
• Texture. Curly costs more than straight, since the curl has to occur naturally in the donor. Natural grey and light hair are rarer again.
• Single donor or mixed. Keeping ponytails separate yields far less usable stock.
• Number of middlemen. Temple to agent to exporter to importer to seller, each adding margin.
• Shortcuts. Acid washing, dyeing and steaming are cheap ways to fake consistency.

Far below market usually means a shortcut was taken. Far above usually means you are paying middlemen, not better hair.

Raw Indian hair bundles are wefts of 100 percent unprocessed human hair from one single donor, collected at Hindu temples in South India. The hair has never been dyed, bleached, steam textured or silicone coated, and the cuticle is intact and aligned. It is widely considered the highest grade of hair extension available.

Remy only means the strands all face the same direction. It says nothing about processing, and Remy hair is usually chemically treated and often mixed from several donors. Raw hair is single donor with no chemical processing at all. In practice Remy lasts 6 to 12 months, while raw Indian hair lasts 3 to 5 years.

Raw is the stricter category. Virgin hair is unprocessed but can be collected from several donors through commercial channels. Raw hair is single donor and temple sourced, so texture and colour stay consistent inside a bundle.

3 to 5 years with correct care. The hair has never been chemically weakened, so it keeps its natural strength far longer than processed hair, and many customers reinstall the same bundles for years.

2 to 3 bundles for straight and wavy, 3 to 4 for curly and deep wave. Add one more for lengths above 26 inches. With a closure or frontal, most installs use 2 to 3 bundles plus the closure.

12 to 40 inches in every texture. Curly and deep wave wear shorter than the measured length once installed, so choose one size up if you want a specific finished length.

Yes. Because it is fully unprocessed it lifts evenly, including to lighter shades. Work with a licensed colourist and strand test first. Bleaching does shorten the lifespan, so plan a moisture and protein routine afterwards.

Five things drive price: length, how rare the texture is, whether the hair is single donor or mixed, how many middlemen sit between the temple and the seller, and whether processing shortcuts were used. Priced far below market usually means a shortcut. Priced far above usually means extra margins rather than better hair.

Yes. Hair is donated voluntarily by devotees as a religious offering called tonsure. The donor is not paid and nothing is taken without consent. Temples release the collected hair, and proceeds typically support temple operations and charitable work.

Look for natural variation between bundles rather than identical curls, and check that the hair feels like clean healthy hair rather than glass slick, which points to a silicone coat. Ask the seller to name the source and confirm single donor. Ordering a sample kit first is the most reliable test.
